Wake Surfing at Scorpion Bay with WakeSurf AZ

Do you love water sports? Whether you are an avid water skier or wakeboarder, or new to water sports, Wake Surfing could be your next exciting challenge. Wake Surfing at Scorpion Bay was recently featured on FOX 10 News because it has become increasingly popular with innovations to larger wakeboard boats such as the Nautique G23. Instructors Mike and Angie Viland use this boat to create a surf wake that extends back as far as 25 feet. The wake allows even the heaviest riders to surf without a rope.

It’s all right here at Scorpion Bay

You don't have to drive to the beach to catch a wave. WakeSurfAZ instructors Mike and Angie Viland create their own endless waves at Scorpion Bay on Lake Pleasant. Wake Surfing requires no previous surfing experience. It’s a safe, easy, and fun way for all ages to enjoy a day on the lake. With a little experience and some expertise from WakeSurfAZ instructors, you will be up on the board and surfing in no time. When you book a lesson, they provide the boards, life jackets and limited sizes in wetsuits. Or feel free to bring your own life jacket/or wetsuit.

“We’ve had a wide range and ages of people try this out and immediately just love the wake surfing experience,” explained Angie Viland. “People are worried about being fit enough but if you can pull yourself up into a boat, you are fit enough to learn to wake surf with us.”

Once your lesson request is received, you’ll receive an email so you can select a date. Payment is due when the lesson is complete. For each ride, you’ll need to include the name, age, height, weight and skill level of the surfers to ensure the proper equipment is on board.

Lessons for all Skill Levels:

Beginner: The rider will learn the “Wake Surfing start” and the proper surf stance and good form. The rider will then be introduced to basic tricks such as carving turns, balance maneuvers, floaters, and ollies.

Intermediate: Riders who already have the skill to surf without the rope will learn some more advanced maneuvers such as bottom turns, slashes, board slides, ollies and airs, and 360s. The rider will also be introduced to switch riding, backside riding, and surf side transfers.

Advanced: Riders will be encouraged to try more advanced, pro level maneuvers, and combinations of maneuvers. Those who are already proficient at switch stance riding will be introduced to tricks such as alley oop, air 360, air 180, and air reverse.  Riders will also be introduced to body varials and shuv-its.

Instructors:

Wake Surfers will appreciate the passion, experience and enthusiasm of instructors Mike and Angie Viland. They picked up the sport in 2009, started teaching local enthusiasts how to Wake Surf in 2010, and legitimized their teaching methods by opening their Wake Surf school in 2012.  Since then, they have taught lessons, participated in clinics, and coached competitive Wake Surfing to riders from all over the world.

Mike is a master’s division rider, claiming two world titles, three U.S. national titles, and was voted the 2016 CWSA's Wake Surfing Person of the Year.

We’ve worked with so many different abilities of athletes and amateurs, but each has progressed through our lessons and expressed what a great day they had on the lake, regardless of skill level,” shared Mike.

Angie is a pro rider and has earned the top five world-ranking finishes for four years running.  She was also voted CWSA's Wake Surfing Person of the Year for 2020 and has won the CWSA's award for Best Trick of the Year by a female rider.

Mike and Angie extend personal attention to everyone they teach, “Our goal is to spread the stoke for the sport we love and provide a complete Wake Surfing experience for anyone up for the challenge unforgettable experience on the lake.”
