Celebrate Earth Day at Lake Pleasant Clean Up Event

Earth Day is a great chance to get outside and give back to Mother Nature. Like years past, The Maricopa County Parks and Recreation Department is offering an opportunity to enjoy the desert and do some good. The department is hosting a Lake Pleasant Earth Day Clean-Up Event Saturday, April 20, 2024, from 8-11 a.m. at the Lake Pleasant Regional Park. After all that hard work be sure to stop by Scorpion Bay Grille for a bite to eat or drink to unwind.

To accomplish the goal of the event, they’re looking for 100 volunteers to participate. You don’t need to have any previous experience or training, just a willingness to give Mother Earth a little love and clean up the area.

If you choose to attend, plan on bringing:

  • Gloves
  • Plenty of water
  • Sunscreen
  • Hat
  • Sunglasses
  • Salty Snacks
  • Sports Drinks or water with electrolytes
  • Closed-toe shoes

Your time will be spent picking up litter along the shoreline and day-use areas as well as the many lakeside campgrounds. Volunteers will be working on uneven and sometimes rocky surfaces.

The first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970 after Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin recruited young activist Denis Hayes to organize local college campus teach-ins and ultimately scale the awareness of Earth’s deteriorating health to a larger audience. They chose April 22, a weekday between spring break and final exams, to maximize the greatest student participation.
